In Between Worlds is a long-term project that redefines the complexities of gender and identity, with a focus on how individuals in the LGBTQ+ community navigate self-expression within personal and societal contexts. The first participant in this project is Kaikai Chou, a vibrant, energetic individual from Taiwan, whose personality shines both in person and through his social media presence. Kaikai is not only a skilled dancer and public speaker, but he also has a remarkable ability to connect with others, offering warmth and enthusiasm wherever he goes. His presence brings a sense of relief, as his energy and optimism never fail to light up any room he enters.
Through this series, I aim to capture Kaikai's emotional depth and physical flexibility as he embodies his identity within the larger LGBTQ+ context. The photographs focus on the fluidity of his body and the subtle yet powerful expressions of his identity, which reflects the ongoing evolution of gender and selfhood. Kaikai's attention to detail and high emotional intelligence come through in his thoughtful, empathetic interactions with others. His ability to consider situations from various perspectives is evident in his demeanor and in the way he navigates both the personal and societal expectations placed on him.
This first part of the project reflects Kaikai's journey of embracing and expressing his identity, as well as the broader journey of self-discovery within the LGBTQ+ community. Through this visual exploration, In Between Worlds seeks to illuminate the complexities of identity formation, gender expression, and the ever-changing landscape of selfhood.
